PostSubject: The Flames   Mon Dec 29, 2008 5:56 pm

I nearly jump from my seat as a crack that matches that of a whip
radiates from a bolt of purple lightning. Thunderstorms are usually
enjoyable, but this is too loud. I plug my ears, turning back to my
book. The thunder cracks again, but this time at a reasonable volume.

Suddenly, the lights flicker and go out.

"Damn," I mutter. The power outage is just my luck! I was only a paragraph away from the end of the chapter!

I suppose there is nothing I can do about ti. I sigh and get up, feeling my way to the closet.

As I open the door, it squeaks, as usual. I feel around, grabbing six candles.

Once again moving along the wall, I make it to the kitchen and retrieve a lighter. Soon, the candles are lit and I can see.

Two at a time, I move the candles to the den and arrange them in a
semi-circle. Once finished, I sit cross legged, surrounded by tiny
flames. I sit close because, though there is light, it is dim.

I open my book to where I left off. Finally, I can get on with what I was doing.

Soon, the real world is gone, replaced by a forest. I'm following the main character about.

Slowly, I become aware that there is a strong smell of burning
carpet. i cast my eyes around me, startled. It doesn't take long to
find the source of the smell. Once of the candles has tipped over,
spreading its flame to the rug.

I yelp and try to jump up, but I find my legs frozen in place. I try again to move, but cannot.

Another candle tips, and I begin to panic. I did not touch it.

Worse than that, it tipped toward me. The rug is on fire in a new spot now, and it is spreading.

Just as my pants pick up the flame, the remaining candles fall. The
six fires begin to blend together, as more of my pants disintegrate to

A new smell enters the mix, accompanied by a searing pain. My legs are burning.

I attempt to scream, but smoke fills my lungs and I cough
violently. More of my body is burning now, and I feel nothing but pain.
I barely notice anything but the pain.

A malicious laugh suddenly fills my ears. I don't know where it
comes from I don't care. I'm terrified, and it nearly replaces the

Then the laughing stops and a voice, just as malicious says, "And to think. . . you are just the first."

It is the last thing I hear.
